Love: a different metaphor

Love is a collaborative work of art Love is an aesthetic experience Love is unpredictable Love is creative It requires communication and discipline It's frustrating and emotionally demanding It involves both joy and pain Each experience of love is different -Mandy Len Catron A bit from Mandy Len Catron's ted talk. I like this version of a metaphor. It implies that love is something you create. It doesn't just happen to you. Contrary to the romantic view of "falling" in love. It will not draw, paint, or sing itself. It's an active decision. One that requires a specific kind of awareness of your own intentions.

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (1984) | Robert Cialdini

When you see a source get quoted over and over again, you get a reaction of "I have to see this." Social Proof. And It has stood beatings of time, having been published 33 years ago. That was what happened. The way its presented is like a self-defense kind of a book. In this case, the black arts of influence and compliance professionals. (That was exaggerating it a bit but) the same way gunpowder can be misused as fireworks or bullets; Influence can be used for good and terrible purposes. Cialdini described key principles or weapons of Influence.

Calvin and Hobbes

I'm a late adopter of Calvin and Hobbes; and of Bill Watterson's works. I guess mostly because it's not really circulated in the Philippines. I grow more and more a fan of this bratty kid and his friend tiger.  Someone posted on reddit about what is the best Calvin and Hobbes quote. Sure enough, people responded with clever, insightful bits. The following are the one's I particularly picked out. Hobbes: If good things lasted forever, how would we appreciate how precious they are?   ... Calvin: If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, i'll bet they'd live a lot differently. Hobbes: How so? Calvin: Well, when you look into infinity, you realize there are more important things than what people do all day. ... Dad: The world isn't fair, Calvin. Calvin: I know, but why isn't it ever unfair in my favor? ...     It's funny how day by day, nothing changes. But when you look back everything is dif...

Ip Man (2008) - Ip Man 2 (2010) - Ip Man 3 (2015)

I binge-watched an Ip Man marathon. Mostly because Donnie Yen was awesome in the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His character, Chirrut Imwe was spectacular. I probably should have caught up on the Ip Man series much earlier because he taught Bruce Lee. Also, I saw the Wong Kar Wai take of Ip Man's story already, The Grandmaster. and I still didn't get caught up on the Ip Man series. So in a weird way, I got a deeper appreciation for Ip Man and Wing Chun through Donnie Yen and Star Wars. What's striking was I realized I never see the take from the Asian's side of the war. Even on the early 1920's-1930's war between Japan and China. War affects people on a mass level. From which ever side you may be, it's violent and people suffer enormously. Anyway, back to the series. Having seen it on one straight sitting, It's easy to compare it to one another.  In terms of fighting, the f irst was pitted against Japanese martial arts, Karate. The s econd film wa...

Saving Sally (2016)

This was a visual treat. With the ongoing drama behind the Metro Manila Film Festival, I'm glad this movie got a shot at being viewed on a national level.  And I hope the trend continues where the quality of films are better and better every year. Without giving too much away, i t's  a typical love story; the geek and the damsel-in-distress. It was easy to empathize with the male character, for the female lead's part not so much.  It is beautifully made. It reminded me of some early Japanese Animation Films. There are a couple of comic book references. I'm sure Filipino comic artists and readers got a bit of a kick. The story built up quite nicely. The last part kind of fizzled. I feel like it could have been stronger. But overall it was very impressive.
