Days of Being Wild (1990 - Hong Kong)

If I'm correct, these are the stories in the movie. or at least the relations we get to see.

Su li zhen and York
Mimi and York
Mimi and York's friend
Su li zhen and Policeman
Policeman and York
Step mom and York

I don't know what these short snippets of stories inside stories are supposed to be called.
But they're an amazing tool in keeping color to story.

There's a snippet in the film. about a legless bird, or a type of bird that can only land once, and the only time that it lands is when it dies. So it never lands. It's a metaphor for the guy in the film. He jumps from one woman to another, never content, never landing. It's then explained, or he's actualized that he's always been dead. At least in the metaphorical sense of the legless bird.

It may also be a matter of upbringing. it's also explained that he was given to his step mom when she was young to take care of. She will be given money every month until the boy was 18. The boy eventually grew up, looking for that original mother, which does not want him.
The boy grew reckless, cold-hearted. Longing for a love he cannot have.

The dude then channels these longing, to two ladies, Su li Zhen and Mimi who have the unfortunate luck of falling in love with him. That's the thing with something we can't have. We always want more of it. They eventually come to terms in their own ways that they'll never have the guy.

Su li zhen then finds comfort, or a connection with a cop who routinely passes along the streets for this duty. They share the streets of Hong Kong, just talking.  One scene the cop goes something like "you can call me instead, i'll be here up around this time" Their story never quite resolves since the cop then changes to become a sailor. The cop implies that he always thought the girl would call him but during the period she never did. Ultimately, when cop then turned sailor, went to the Philippines, no one was there at the telephone booth to answer the girl's call.

Mimi gets the affection of York's friend. Who shows love by giving Mimi money, from selling York's car to go to the Philippines. In one scene, York's friend  goes something like "If you don't find Yuddy, come back to me" then leaves.

The first film of missed connections, longing, desire, and unresolved issues. Subtle unrequited love that will be pounded upon in the next films of wong kar wai.

Themes of Time and Memory and stand out to me.

There's one scene where the guy tells su li zhen, something like "because of this 1 minute, i'll remember you forever"

She later reveals to the cop, that it's the sweetest thing someone's said to her.

Unrequited Love
There is unrequited love in the movie. but not every story arc, not in the strictest sense of the term. There should be a word for when two people are reluctant to start a relationship. or when they never quite form..

A missed connection.

It was there but never realized.
