Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
It appears Hollywood made a killing of a Frankenstein franchise around the 1930's, the same way superheroes movies are created successively these days. This would be the first Frankenstein film I've seen in the list of sequels written in its Wikipedia page. I've seen various incarnations from Hotel Transylvania to popular cartoons growing up, and a couple months back, the main source written by Mary Shelley.
The original work had Frankenstein's monster as this sappy creature. Sad and lonely. Really only wished to have a female friend. Though strong and reckless, it may have reflected what the literary culture was around Mary Shelley's time in the 1800's. With the 1935 movie, it's still part of the Frankenstein character's psyche; still sad and lonely deep inside. I remember in the novel, the monster harangues Frankenstein to make a female version. It never got finished because Viktor Frankenstein foresaw what might happen. That he would just be creating another monster, and the inadequacy the monster feels may not be sufficed even if he makes him a bride, and the bride may not react lightly towards the monster as well. In the movie, (spoiler alert), that's what happens, or is suggested. This new mad doctor bends Henry Frankenstein's arm to make the bride. (Viktor and Henry are the same; Viktor was the main character in Mary Shelley's, Henry in the 1930's series). They succeed in making the bride but she reacts negatively to the monster. Once again, unaccepted. The monster blows up the tower along with Pretorious the new mad doctor, and the "bride".
