Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

The Szalinski's are introduced. Rick Moranis is the nerd dad who's trying build his shrinking machine. The neighbor's are a jock type of a family. They just want to go fishing. The children of the families barely interact. Until, one of the neighbor's kids breaks the Szalinski's glass window. The story evolves on how the kids get shrunk by the machine and the journey from the lawn to the front of the house, to the cheerios bowl. And along the way, they meet a giant ant. Not giant, the kids just happened to be smaller than the actual ant.

I remember seeing this a couple times as a kid. Now that I've had some distance to it and with young adult eyes, it does seem different. Mostly because I remember being so impressed by it. Now, It doesnt seem great compared to other movies. It's not bad. I appreciate still the value in it. What it is, is probably that the novelty has worn off. Or it could be that the movie is really for kids. Or maybe Nostalgia really is fleeting. It was exciting only for a small while. Nevertheless, it's a good movie to watch with kids. Harmless fun.

Honey, I Blew Up The Kid

Set a few years after the kids shrinking incident, Szalinski now has funding for his invention. But he has no control over the project. The corporate entity that holds it wants to engineer the technology to expand things. Make things big. Still, Szalinski gets no respect from the project leader and the other scientists. With their family situation, they now have a new baby and the eldest daughter has gone away to college. The story pickups when Szalinski with his son, takes the baby to their lab, and accidentally hits the baby with their new technology. The baby eventually get bigger and bigger, while walking through electrically charged things. The plot goes into how do they calm down a giant baby, who from his point of view things are his toys or Las Vegas is his playground.

I think this is the best of the three. It has the feels and small similarities with "Back to the Future". Come to think of it, these movies came out right after "Back to the Future" was released. They must have had this riding that wave of science-y list of films that was released in the 90's. Basically, Disney's version of a Giant Monster/Disaster Movie. They even have a Godzilla mention.

Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves

This seemed way too Disney-fied. It's probably great for TV but not too much for the big screen. The only remaining character is Szalinski. Adam the baby, is on his early teens now. This now revolves around Szalinski and his brother's family. This time the parents get shrunk. (Szalinski should stop storing billiard balls in high places.) While the kids think the parents are gone, they throw a party. Thus evolving a teen's home party. Not the usual kind, one sees in teen movies. The parents struggle to go down from the room upstairs to the kitchen. They eventually witness how the kids could take care of themselves; learn to trust them more and other life lessons. Huh. Maybe, this movie is more for parents than for kids?
